Education in the US is extremely expensive ranging from $15000 to $50000 a year with the exclusion of stationary, food, housing, health insurance and commuting expenses. The financial assistance offered is only on the basis of merit and depends on the university and level of study.
There are a great number of financial aids being offered in the fields of engineering, physical sciences and biology but the non professional courses like social sciences, business and management aren’t supported by financial aids. Different levels of study are associated with different patterns of aid. Doctoral levels find more chances of assistance when compared to graduate level. The various types of financial aid made available are:
1. Tuition fee Exemption – This is usually awarded in association with a scholarship where the students are exempted from the payment of tuition fee. However, they will have to pay for other facilities like library, sports, computer and health care.
2. Scholarship – A scholarship is awarded to the student with an outstanding meritorious academic record. Complete scholarship takes care of the entire living expenses of the student while a partial scholarship would require to be funded partly by the students. Students under doctoral levels in the fields of social sciences, humanities and pure sciences are awarded with USEFI oversees US Government scholarships, the Institute of International Education (IIE) scholarships and East-West Center scholarships. Announcements pertaining to these scholarships are made by USEFI in the month of July.
3. Stipend – Graduate students also receive financial help in the form of stipend or assistantship which requires them to work for a minimum of 20 hours a week. These involve teaching or research and are granted to foreign students only after a semester or year after they prove themselves. They might also be asked to qualify the Test of Spoken English.
